Do you have your PAWS 2009 Calendar?

Keep track of the important dates in your life and support a great cause at the same time. The colorful 2009 PAWS Calendar is packed with great photographs of the PAWS animals doing what they do best, sharing their love with and giving support to children and seniors.

Proceeds from the sale of the PAWS Calendar go to support this outstanding program that has volunteers throughout Carbon and Emery Counties. This dedicated four legged support team and their equally dedicated humans share their love at places like the Price City Library, local schools and regional care centers. They give joy and comfort to all they come in contact with and they might as well give joy and comfort to you every day of the year.

Calendars can be purchased for $12 at the Active Re-Entry office or sent through the mail by calling (435) 637-4950. Do your part and support this worthy cause in 2009.

Scoodeo Program comes to DVD...

Everyone has seen them; the people who through necessity must use a personal mobility device or scooter to get around in their daily lives. And while everyone has seen them, most people are unaware of their struggles to make it from their homes to their appointments and to do daily chores.

Imagine that you yourself are faced with suddenly having to use a scooter. Would you know how to operate the device safely? Would you know the rules of the road? Would you know the safe routes to use to get to your appointments?
Faced with all of this uncertainty is a daunting prospect and that is why Active Re-Entry and the Southeastern Utah Health Department have teamed up to create the "Scoodeo Program". Similar in design to a bicycle rodeo, the "Scoodeo" Program helps people who utilize these personal mobility devices to operate the machines in a safe manner for themselves as well as the traveling public in automobiles.

In an effort to draw attention to this valuable program Active Re-Entry and the Southeastern Utah Health Department commissioned local advertising & production company Teply Graphic Arts & Publishing, LLC to produce a video documenting the program.

To get footage for the program, Teply himself drove a 9.5 mile round trip route on a scooter from The Housing Authority of Carbon County to Active Re-Entry's Offices, Castleview Hospital and various stores and back again. While much of the route is modern and comfortable, Teply was surprised at the challenges that faced the scooter riders as they traveled the route. "It was really scary at times", Teply stated. "It was an eye-opener to use a route in an exposed vehicle trying to avoid people on the sidewalks and having to share the road with cars and trucks."

In addition to traveling the routes used by the personal mobility devices, Teply also participated in an actual "Scoodeo" where he was tested on agility, safe operation and a variety of other tasks. "Much of the footage in the video was taken from the front of the scooter so that people really get a sense of what it is like to travel the routes that these folks have to take, every day, rain, snow or blistering heat", Teply commented.

The video has been divided into two parts, an eight-minute "teaser" and a "broadcast 30 minute" length program. The video is designed to educate viewers and to promote a worthwhile program. SueAnn Martell, a recent viewer of the program commented, "I was shocked when I saw the video. I had no idea what these people had to go through. I certainly have a much better appreciation of them and how they have to travel than I did before."

"What people don't understand, is that as a rural area, we don't have the amenities of the rest of society... Scooters are our UTA!" said Nancy Bentley, Director of Active Re-Entry.

A preview of the video will be available at the Active Re-Entry website www.arecil.org or by visiting the Active Re-Entry offices where the DVDs are available for $5 each. Proceeds go to buying additional safety gear for the Scooters.

Did you know that the disabled in motorized wheelchairs and on scooters have the same rights to the road as a bicyclist? Please share the road and help make their journies around town less "eventful."
