Five Core Services

Information and Referral

Providing basic information on available resources to assist individuals with disabilities to remain living as independently as possible. Information and Referral means giving information about services provided under the State's social services program and other service programs, both public and private; brief assessment to determine the most appropriate resource to meet the stated needs of the person requesting services, and referral to and follow-up with those community resources which provide or make available such services. The purpose of a good information and referral program is to connect people with resources that can help them.

Individual and Systems Advocacy

The program supports both individual and community advocacy strategies that create positive change for persons with disabilities and their environment both on the state and national levels. The program provides basic information about advocacy to persons with disabilities and connects them to additional resources. The program also provides direct advocacy for individuals at the community level; ensuring persons with disabilities are integrated into their communities successfully.

Independent Living Skills Training

Provides skills training to enhance the independence of adults with disabilities in their homes, families, and communities. The program provides classes in cooking, assertiveness, relationships, financial management, adjustment to disability, and others as consumer needs dictate. Persons with disabilities can also get help finding accessible housing, receive peer support, and work individually with staff. Peer Counseling and Support

Support groups bring together persons with disabilities to collectively share experiences, knowledge, and skills. A few of the groups sponsored by ARECIL include: (please call the Center to make sure about dates and times. Sometimes, meetings are re-scheduled for special presentations or presenters)

• Active Access Support Group: Monthly meetings to unite individuals who use scooters or wheelchairs for mobility within the community. This includes training and education on the use and maintenance of the equipment as well as recreation and socialization activities.
• Caregivers Support Group: Monthly meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1:30) that provide education, referral services, support, and assistance to families and professionals involved in caregiving.
• Grief Support Group: Monthly meetings that give support to those experiencing grief from the loss of a loved one. (usually the second Wednesday of each month at 1:30)
• Low Vision Support Group: Monthly meetings in both Carbon and Emery Counties with peers to learn techniques to adapt to their disability. Skills and experiences are shared.

Nursing Home Diversion and Transition

The transition from nursing homes and other institutions to community-based residences; assisting individuals to avoid institutional placement, and transition of youth with significant disabilities after completion of secondary education to post-secondary life. This program provides services to people living in nursing homes who want to move out into the community. Services available also help divert individuals living in the community from having to enter a nursing home. The program identifies the needs of participants, helping them make the transition and connects them to appropriate agencies and support systems in the community.
